Early morning drive to Madurai, the ancient
capital of the Pandiyas (140 kms 3 hrs).
Madurai is one of South India's great temple towns;
it has a rich cultural heritage passed on from the
great Tamil era for more than 2500 years.
Visit Meenakshi Amman temple and Thirumalainayakarmahal which is built in the 17th century.
After breakfast, Drive to Karaikudi, the ancient city
of the rich Chettiyar Merchants (81 kms 1 ½ hrs).
Visit Chettinad Houses, extensive antique shops, weekly shandy [village market]; also have a visit to Craftsmen working with wood and metal,
silversmiths and goldsmiths.
Visit Brahadeeswara Temple [temple for Shiva],
built by the Chola King in the 10th century AD. It has 14-tiered pyramid-shaped tower over the temple sanctum, 64.8m tall with a square base topped by huge monolithic granite cupolas .
Its unique construction ensures that the shadow of the
cupola never falls on the ground.
Take a heritage walk for 2-3 hours early in the
morning.
After breakfast, visit Sri Aurobindo Ashram and Manakula Vinayakar Temple dedicated to lord Ganesh.
After lunch, visit the international township of
Auroville.
